“If you know the enemy and know yourself, you need not fear the result of a hundred battles.”

-Sun Tzu, Art of War

To score well in any exam, you need to understand the exam first, you need to understand its requirements and pattern. When you look at the mistakes, the scope is really large. However, I would like to mention few common mistakes which most of the aspirants do.

  1. Not going through the syllabus

GATE has a detailed syllabus, providing you with topics and sub topics in every subject. Adhere to syllabus and neither over-prepare nor under-prepare for the exams. When you have concise stuff to work upon, you will waste your time less and will be focused in right direction.

  1. Conceptual Clarity

I have seen students running behind the formulae rather than concepts. They very often are much excited about the tips and tricks that when memorised will yield results. It doesn’t happen like this all the time. What’s most important is to brush up the concepts and have strong hold on basics

  1. Mathematical approach and practice

A mere hold on theory is not going to help you crack the exam. Practice a lot with numericals and have a mathematical approach towards problems. Be good with calculations in mind, plotting graphs, using calculus etc. Mathematics is a tool, sharpen it.

  1. Panic during test series

It may happen that the performance during test series is not always what and how you want it to be. But you need to understand that the aim of the test series is to improve your accuracy and time management. So analyse it with a calm mind and don’t panic.

  1. Patience and Discipline

Have patience when you are preparing for anything at this level. Sometimes good things do take time. Don’t get disappointed if you are not getting results immediately. Just maintain the discipline and be consistent with your efforts.
